Sears Defends Attacks on Virginia Jobs as Virginia Job Market Slows

VIRGINIA - New reporting from 13 News Now in Norfolk details that the latest jobs report shows the Virginia job market slowing down because of Donald Trump’s attacks on Virginia jobs.

Winsome Earle-Sears has repeatedly cheered on Donald Trump’s attacks on Virginia jobs and was caught on tape downplaying the attacks saying “the media is making it out to be a huge, huge thing… and I don’t understand why.”

“As thousands of Virginians face layoffs, Winsome Earle-Sears continues to defend, downplay, and dismiss attacks on Virginia jobs. The Commonwealth deserves a leader who will fight for them instead of Sears who is only focused on pushing Trump’s agenda forward no matter the cost for Virginia,” said DPVA Spokesperson Maggie Amjad.

13  News Now: June jobs report: More jobs added, but economy slowing down, expert says

  • McNab [Bob McNab, chair of the Department of Economics at Old Dominion University] said these numbers from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics show how slow the job market is moving
  • He expects that trend to continue through the year, mainly because federal employees who’ve taken offers to leave federal positions are still counted as employed until this fall.
  • Come October 1, McNab said all of those people are going to show up as unemployed across Hampton Roads and Virginia.
  • "We should see unemployment increase in the fall, just from what’s happening with the federal government," he explained. "And that doesn’t include the uncertainty surrounding tariffs."
  • Democratic candidate for Virginia governor, Abigail Spanberger, previously told 13News Now she’s concerned about unemployment rates.
  • “The reality is the impact on Virginia’s economy is likely to be dire, because it isn’t just the loss of jobs and the loss of livelihood for those individuals who have lost their jobs, but it’s the government contractors,” she said during a campaign stop last weekend.
  • Meanwhile, Republican gubernatorial candidate Winsome Earle-Sears has come out behind President Donald Trump and the recent federal layoffs.
  • We reached out to the Earle-Sears campaign for a more recent comment about the new unemployment numbers, but they have not responded at this time.
