Grammy-nominated, legendary pianist Monty Alexander headlines Opening Night at the sumptuous, jewel box Faena Theater. Monty’s style includes a range of Jazz and Jamaican musical experiences — the Great American Songbook, the blues, gospel and bebop, calypso and reggae.
His endless melody-making, effervescent grooves and sophisticated voicing always delight a global audience drawn to his vibrant personality and soulful message, making him an American Jazz classic. His recently released album, Love Notes, couples his passion for music with his extraordinary piano playing and the intimacy of his wonderful vocals.

South Beach Jazz Festival’s “Jazz Hits the Road,” a beautiful day of jazz music. The event is free and open to the community – people of all ages will enjoy the show!
Seven performances jazz up 1100 Lincoln Plaza all day with a series of free performances from Latin Jazz great Sammy Figueroa presenting A Tribute to Cal Trader, world-renowned Jazz pianist, and Hammond organist Mike LeDonne, to South Florida favorite Wendy Pedersen, inspirational locals, to a fabulous festival finale by Gafieira Rio Miami, an authentic Brazilian Big Band that fuses samba, jazz and funk with a powerful 5-piece horn section, plus bass, guitar, drums, percussion, and vocals. The full line-up includes: The Spirit of Goodwill Band, Power Access Scholarship winner Marnel Jean, Inspirational vocalist Aristide Reinoso, Wendy Pedersen Quintet, Sammy Figueroa presents A tribute to Cal Tjader, Mike LeDonne Groover Quartet, and Gafieira Rio Miami.

The Spirit of Goodwill band, made up of people with a variety of disabilities – come together to play beautiful music. Their journey is one filled with setbacks, victories and—ultimately—growth as individuals. Their joy of participation and sense of empowerment shows on each musician’s face as they play.
This disciplined group of men and women, with their own style of music, has much more to give than just a great sound. They offer inspiration and the message of music’s nurturing powers for people with and without disabilities.

Wendy Pedersen is one of South Florida’s favorite performers. Her high-energy vocal delivery, with deep, convincing emotion has been impacting audiences for many years.
Wendy has won many awards including the Southern Bell/Pace “Jazz Artist of the Year” and a Miami New Times “best vocalist”. She has toured the globe as a featured soloist both on her own as well with other artists, and has headlined festivals in The United States, Madrid, Spain and Russia.

2:30 pm - 4:00 pm: Jazz Hits the Road: Sammy Figueroa
Renowned percussionist and Grammy nominee Sammy Figueroa has long been regarded as one of the world’s great musicians. As one of the music’s leading percussionists, he has played on countless records and is well-known for his versatility in many musical styles.
Figueroa brings his Cal Tjader tribute to the South Beach Jazz Festival. Cal Tjader created one of the most well-known sounds in Latin jazz. He crafted a combination of vibraphones with swinging rhythms of mambo and salsa. This concert will have you out of your seats, smiling and dancing on Lincoln Road.

4:30 pm - 6:00 pm: Jazz Hits the Road: Mike LeDonne Groover Quartet
Equally formidable on the piano and the Hammond B3 organ, Mike LeDonne made his reputation in the 1990s as an ace accompanist touring and recording with jazz legends such as Milt Jackson, Sonny Rollins, Bobby Hutcherson, and Benny Golson.
He started establishing himself on the B3 around the turn of the century, announcing his arrival as a major new voice with 2004’s Smokin’ Out Loud (Savant), a session featuring the band performing at the JHL.

6:30 pm - 8:00 pm: Jazz Hits the Road: Gafieira Rio Miami
Gafieira Rio Miami is an 11-piece Brazilian big band created by bassist and Latin Grammy winner Diogo Brown. One of the most in-demand bass players in the industry, Brown has worked with renowned artists such as Laura Pausini, Buika, Nouvelle Vague and Gloria Estefan.
To put together this one-of-a-kind samba/jazz big band he called on Latin GRAMMY-nominated saxophonist Dr. Pablo Gil, and also Pedro Carrero, former principal trombonist of the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra. With a powerful 5-piece horn section, plus bass, guitar, drums, percussion and the vocals of Isa Duarte, Gafieira Rio Miami fuses samba, jazz and soul inspired by the 20th century Rio de Janeiro joyous ballroom dance music known as “samba de gafieira.”
