Water customers asked to identify lead pipes in homes for free replacement

Pennsylvania American Water, the public water provider for South Fayette Township, is asking residents to identify lead pipes in their basements and homes so the utility can replace the dangerous material at no cost to residents.

Starting the week of January 30, 2023, water customers whose service line material is unknown to the utility company will receive a postcard with information on how to participate in a survey to help identify any lead pipes in their homes.

Customers can respond via website or by phoning the company’s project management firm, Greeley and Hansen. As part of this survey, customers will be asked to answer a few questions about their water service line and, if possible, to upload a photo of their service line material. The pipes usually are located in the basement.

In a second phase, the contractor Greeley and Hansen will visit homes that have not responded to the survey to determine if their water pipes contain lead.

Determining what material every customer’s service line is made of – including the lines owned by them and not just by us – is a massive undertaking. We’re asking our customers to take this request seriously and respond so we can act accordingly. We ask for your help in getting the word out to your community.
