We know the rain has been persistent lately, and for many, it has brought on those unwelcome but natural seasonal blues. But not to worry—community, connection, and creativity are the best remedies for low moods. And our next Open Studios is happening on May 3rd! Join us in connecting with our vibrant artistic community and celebrating the incredible talent that calls Space 4 Art home.
As one of just two Open Studios scheduled for this year, May 3 is a can’t-miss event. Open Studios is an opportunity for our resident artists to showcase their latest work and creative practices with friends and community— and a rare opportunity for the broader community to get an intimate view of the creative process. By May, six new tenants will have joined us since our last Open Studios in December, 2024, bringing new work, experiences, and ideas to the Space!
Expect food, drinks, and musical performances. Come mingle with fellow art lovers, artists, and community members. The warmth of community and the spark of art are just around the corner!
See you on May 3rd, 5-7:30 PM!
We are so grateful for the extension of our photography workshop series at King-Chavez Preparatory Academy, led by the talented Michael Potterf, an S4A Teaching Artist since last fall. These workshops have been so popular with the students that King-Chavez funded additional sessions with Michael. K-C's continued support allowed for a greater impact and students to further explore and develop their skills in photography.
We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to King-Chavez for their generous commitment to the arts and their dedication to enriching the educational experiences of local students. With these extended workshops, students had more opportunities to engage with the art of photography, learn from an artist like Michael, and build valuable skills that will serve them in both creative and professional pursuits.
We're looking forward to the continued success of this partnership and seeing more amazing work by students like those pictured below. Great job, students, and thank you, Michael, for developing such a loved workshop!
S4A is proud to spread the word about the work of its tenant artists. S4A's resident artist May-ling Martinez has installed her piece "Totems / Markers" at the San Diego Airport as part of the Mirror Mirror exhibit. You can find it at the end of Terminal 2 pre-security, where it will be on display until December 2025. Her piece alongside the work of 15 other artists offers travelers a moment of reflection and connection in a typically fast-paced and transient environment.
Tenant-artist Bridget Rountree is exhibiting her work in the S/M/L exhibition, on display until March 27. The City Gallery (1508 C St. AH 314), located on the campus of San Diego City College Downtown, is open Tuesdays through Thursdays from 12-4 PM, with additional hours available by appointment. To schedule a visit outside of regular hours, email [email protected]. For more details on accessing the gallery, click here.
