Thousands of film lovers, celebrities, and industry insiders gathered in Cranford and Asbury Park for the 23rd Annual Garden State Film Festival (GSFF)—New Jersey’s Premier Independent Film Festival®. From March 27 to March 30, crowds poured into historic venues, explored local gems, and gave a vibrant boost to the local economy with their energy and enthusiasm.

“Our attendees had an absolute blast,” said Executive Director Lauren Concar Sheehy. “Asbury Park’s seaside charm and Cranford’s bustling downtown vibe created the perfect backdrop—and our local hotels, restaurants, and small businesses definitely felt the love. We’re proud to uplift arts education and fuel meaningful growth in the communities we serve.”

203 Films. 16 Countries. 49 Events. 1 Unforgettable Festival.

This year’s lineup was another global feast: 203 films from 16 countries, red carpet premieres, live podcasts (45+!), behind-the-scenes panels, karaoke parties, and meet-the-filmmaker events—each moment packed with inspiration and creativity.

GSFF continues to stand tall as a true independent film festival, elevating both international voices and homegrown New Jersey talent. And this year’s buzz? Next level.

A Festival Highlight: A Live Table Read That Moved the Room

Among the standout moments was a powerful live table read of the winning feature screenplay, Fragments of Solace by Fatou Faye. With professional actors bringing the script to life, the emotional energy in the room was palpable—proof of the power of story to connect us all.

Power Panels & Industry Insights

GSFF’s robust programming includes thought-provoking panels, and this year was: “Setting the Stage: New Jersey’s Path from the Birthplace of Film to Global Production Hub”—featuring:

Gannon Murphy, GSFF Honorary Chair, General Manager at Cinelease Studios, and President of the Screen Alliance of New Jersey
Janice Kovach, NJ Motion Picture & Television Commissioner and Mayor of Clinton, NJ
Paul Cosentino, Chief Sales Officer at GreenSlate
Lauri Pitkus, VP of Sales at Emerald Green Trailers and Veteran Location Manager
These leaders explored how New Jersey continues to evolve as a powerhouse in global film production.

WIDE SHOT AUDIENCE STUDENTS
Empowering Future Creatives

Over 480 students participated in GSFF’s Student Community Based Instruction Program, gaining real-world experience in visual effects from Jose L. Marin, Owner of Third Division and Board Chairman of the Visual Effects Society NY.

“We’re planting the seeds for tomorrow’s storytellers,” said Concar Sheehy. “Our mission is to nurture creativity, expand access to the arts, and preserve New Jersey’s cultural legacy.”

Behind Every Frame: An Incredible Team

“Our Board, crew, and volunteers made magic happen,” said Concar Sheehy. “They worked tirelessly—often behind the scenes—to deliver an unforgettable experience.”

She gave special thanks to Director of Operations Kristen Dirato, whose leadership and dedication were instrumental in every success and truly brought this celebration to life.”

Celebration & Recognition

The weekend wrapped with the GSFF Awards Dinner on March 30 at the wonderful Asbury Lanes.  “Filmmakers were beaming,” said Concar Sheehy. “Many left with interest from distributors, press, and new fans.”

Founder Diane Raver added, “Our attendance blew past last year’s. The atmosphere was electric!”

Vice Chair Heather Brittain noted, “From panels to parties, this was a true celebration of talent and community.”
