The Firehouse Art Center is pleased to announce that the 2025/26 Artists-in-Residence have been selected. Saxon Martinez has been selected for the two month Summer Residency in July and August of 2025, and Doug Felkley has been selected for a three month Winter Residency from November through January of 2025/56.
During their residency, each artist will host public programs that will introduce the community to their creative processes. Each artist will also present a culminating exhibit in the Firehouse Main Gallery, and participate in an artist talk with the Firehouse Art Center Executive Director, Elaine Waterman. The selected artists will be available in the Firehouse Art Center South Gallery throughout their residency, where visitors can drop in, visit with the artist, and learn more about the proposed exhibition.
Saxon Martinez’s work is about the investigation and exploration of the brown body by way of the piñata motif. Martinex is a sculptor who makes objects that resemble American piñatas, however his work deviates from the conventional forms of these objects by creating anthropomorphic forms that embody 3-D self-portraits.
Doug Felkley is a teacher, a sculptor, and a sometimes reluctant furniture maker. After retiring from a decades long career as a gymnastics coach, Felkley felt it was time to explore an entirely new second career. This desire for something new led him to study fine furniture making and design at Red Rocks Community College. Upon completion of the program Felkley began taking commissions for custom furniture pieces, something that he found extremely stressful. Looking for a new creative outlet, he began experimenting with wood focused sculpture and found expression for his creative ideas. Although he felt deeply connected to this creative path, he missed working with kids, and out of nowhere an opportunity to be a middle school woodworking teacher showed up! Now, teaching woodworking as an art form gives Felkley an outlet for both of his passions, teaching and art.
The Firehouse Art Center hosts two residencies each year, working in the South Gallery before their culminating solo exhibition in the Main Gallery, with the opportunity to guest curate the accompanying South Gallery. The Artist in Residency program at the Firehouse Art Center supports emerging, mid-career, and established artists, allowing them time, space, and resources to develop their creative work.
