St. Augustine, FL – The St. Augustine Amphitheatre and Limelight Theatre are proud to announce the launch of Black Box Sessions, a new concert series designed to showcase celebrated artists in a close-up, immersive setting. The series will debut with acclaimed Kentucky cellist, composer, and vocalist Ben Sollee on Tuesday, October 21, with two performances at 6:30 PM and 9:00 PM at Limelight Theatre’s Matuza Black Box Theatre.
Set inside the Matuza Black Box Theatre, the new series brings nationally recognized musicians into an intimate, 100-seat cabaret-style space. A longstanding hub for live theatre and arts education in St. Augustine, Limelight Theatre serves more than 20,000 patrons annually and has been recognized as Northeast Florida’s Best Theatre by Broadway World for two consecutive years.
“Limelight is thrilled to partner with one of the most iconic artistic venues in the country and a beloved landmark in the St. Augustine community,” said Sherrie Provence, Executive Director of Limelight Theatre. “We’re honored to be a small part of The St. Augustine Amphitheatre’s incredible reach in bringing world-class artists to the oldest city. We hope this is just the beginning of many collaborations that offer a more intimate experience for those who truly love great music.”
Blurring the boundaries between folk, classical, and soulful Americana, Sollee has captivated audiences for nearly two decades with his signature cello work and introspective songwriting. His latest release, Long Haul (2024), threads together chapters of his artistic journey, drawing on influences from the American and global South. Beyond the stage, Sollee scores for film—LAND (dir. Robin Wright) and Maggie Morre(s) (starring Tina Fey and Jon Hamm)—and for podcasts such as the Peabody-nominated Unreformed.
Black Box Sessions is presented by The St. Augustine Amphitheatre, which was just recently ranked #2 in the U.S. and #3 worldwide in Pollstar Magazine’s 2025 Mid-Year Ticket Sales Report. Managed and operated by SJC Cultural Events, Inc., The St. Augustine Amphitheatre is committed to community collaboration and presenting a diverse range of programming year-round.
“Partnering with Limelight Theatre is an exciting step in expanding how and where we present live music in St. Johns County,” said Cari Baker, Chief Programming Officer of SJC Cultural Events, Inc. “We’re proud to collaborate with a fellow arts organization that shares our commitment to community and creativity, and to connect with audiences in a fresh, intimate setting.”
