From: The Umbrella Community Arts Center
Join us for a FREE opening reception with the artists TOMORROW, Thursday, January 12 from 5-7pm.
Get to know the three Umbrella Studio Artists featured in Earth, Sea, Sky, whose collective time at The Umbrella spans almost 80 years!
Suzanne Hill, Ceramicist
"I work in clay, which is, just by definition, earth. My inspiration comes from the sweep of earth and sky I see on my travels. My favorite spots are places where you can see for miles, where the sky becomes an entity that interacts with the landscape, where the changes in light and the atmosphere result in a constantly changing set of colors and shapes."
Fun fact about Suzanne: Her first day teaching at The Umbrella was September 11, 2001.
Liz Newell, Ceramicist
"For me the outdoors provides a space for contemplation; time spent outdoors fosters a connection to the textures and rhythms of nature. The space between earth and sky...the vastness and quiet allows a renewal of spirit; a place to breathe...Working in clay allows me to explore texture, colors and sounds inspired by the natural world."
Fun fact about Liz: Liz spent over twenty years in Oregon and Colorado before coming to The Umbrella in 2007.
Barbara Willis, Fiber Artist
"Watching sunsets over the pond, colorful fish while snorkeling, the emerging colors of feathers on a juvenile bard owl, bring wonder and the desire for me to recreate colors and incorporate them into weavings. I must feel an excitement, a connection, before ‘transcribing’ colors into a woven piece."
Fun fact about Barbara: Barbara signed her first studio lease in 1982, before The Umbrella was the arts center we know today.
We are pleased to welcome our *new* Ceramics Artist in Residence, Katie Bosley Sabin!
Katie is a talented ceramicist who earned her MFA in Ceramics from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln and has previously been a resident at the Archie Bray in Helena, MT, Mudflat Studios in Boston, MA, and Northern Clay Center in Minneapolis, MN.
Katie specializes in crafting porcelain vessels that combine dynamic forms and dimensional surfaces to create a captivating presence.
Join us for Katie’s artist talk on February 3 at 4pm to learn more about her background, her career as an artist and educator, and her plans for her residency at The Umbrella.
