As Teacher Appreciation Week begins today, the North Carolina Democratic Party issued the following statement emphasizing the many benefits for teachers in Governor Stein’s proposed budget.

“The best way we can show our appreciation to teachers is by passing the Governor’s budget.

Adopting the Governor’s budget would give teachers real raises, restore master’s pay, and invest in our school’s infrastructure so that kids aren’t sent home because their school lacks heat or air conditioning. It would show teachers that we appreciate the incredible work they do educating children and developing the next generation of leaders,” said NCDP Chair Anderson Clayton.  

“I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for all of the teachers who helped me along the way! None of us would. It’s past time that we show up for them.”

Here Is Just Some Of What’s In Governor Stein’s Budget Proposal:

• Governor Stein’s budget calls for a $4 billion bond “to rejuvenate NC schools’ infrastructure” 

• This bond would deliver needed investments in school infrastructure including modernization and new construction projects, working heat and air conditioning, and addressing overcrowded classrooms and trailers. 
• The budget also includes an average “10.6% raise for teachers over the biennium” and raise starting teacher pay to the highest in the Southeast. 
• This comes after recent data shows that North Carolina is ranked 39th in the nation in starting teacher pay and will fall to 44th in the country in overall teacher pay. 
• The Governor’s budget will also reinstate master’s pay to encourage teachers to pursue advanced degrees.
