Families Thriving Together- Guilford Parent Academy will host its Annual Family summit at Ragsdale High School. Staff will lead sessions on topics including transitioning to middle/high school, anti-bullying, yoga, virtual tutoring, advocacy and more. The event is from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. 

Monday, April 24 

New Teacher Signing Day – Join Guilford County Schools as it celebrates its new teachers. Several new GCS educators will be recognized at a signing day celebration. New hires will sign their teaching contracts with family and friends presentThis event begins at 10 a.m. and will be held in the Eugene Street Boardroom.   

FAFSA Helpline – Families and students needing assistance filling out the all-important FAFSA form can get help. Guilford Parent Academy and GCS Counseling Services will have a hotline for Title I families to assist them with filling out the application. Staff will be on hand Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. to walk families through the process. The number is 336-370-3270. 

Tuesday, April 25 

Joint Facilities meeting – GCS leaders will provide an update on the proposed school slated to be constructed in the Southwestern part of the county at the Joint/Capital Facilities Planning Committee meeting on Tuesday, April 25. It will be held at 4 p.m. at the Truist Bank Building on West Market St. in the McAdoo Conference Room. 

American Indian Town Hall- American Indian students and their families are invited to learn about programs and services offered by GCS. The town hall is from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. at Western Middle. Those interested in attending must rsvp by sending an email to [email protected]

Wednesday, April 26 

Stemfest- Oak Ridge Elementary will host an interactive event for parents. Stations will be set up throughout the school for families to interact with different STEM activities their children use and learn about in school. Presenters from NC A&T, HPU, Core Technology, Samet, Code Ninjas, All-A-Flutter and more will be on-site to speak with visitors. This event is from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. 

Thursday, April 27 

Let’s Grow Together – The time to register for kindergarten has arrived! Children who will be five years old by August 31, 2023, are invited to join the next class of kindergartners in Guilford County Schools. Schools across the district will have Kindergarten Kickoff events for incoming students and their families to get a classroom experience through tours and activities. Kindergarten registration can be found at gcsnc.schoolmint.net. A full schedule of open house events can be found here

Friday, April 28 

Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast- Southern Elementary is having a volunteer appreciation breakfast next Friday, April 28th in their media center from 7:30–9 a.m. and will present the Bethanne Jennings Memorial Volunteer of the Year award to a volunteer who is voted on by staff. The award is in honor of one of their former amazing volunteers who passed away due to cancer. As a district, the number of volunteers in schools has surpassed pre-pandemic levels.

Student Awarded more than $1M in Scholarships and Grants- Ben Johnson has always been a standout while at the Middle College at UNCG. His teacher says he has always been driven to excel and to push himself academically. Ben is on track to earn 40 hours of UNCG course credits by the conclusion of his senior year. As one might expect, Ben’s college acceptances and college financial awards are a testament to his hard work. As it currently stands, Ben has been accepted to 17 colleges and universities and has been awarded $1,290,692 in grants and scholarships which puts him in the top percentage of his class for college acceptances and financial awards. Some of the colleges and universities include Guilford College (Nathan Hunt Scholarship recipient), High Point University (Presidential Fellowship recipient), Oberlin College & Conservatory John Frederick Oberlin Scholarship recipient), UNC Chapel Hill (Wood Scholar Recipient), UNCG (Chancellor Scholarship recipient), and Wake Forest University (Recipient of $80,000 annual financial award.) Student Nominated for The Congress of Future Medical Leaders – Zaynab Abdusamad, a 11 at Eastern Guilford High School of Whitsett, NC is a Delegate to the Congress of Future Medical Leaders. The Congress is an honors-only program for high school students who want to become physicians or go into medical research fields. The purpose of this event is to honor, inspire, motivate and direct the top students in the country interested in these careers, to stay true to their dream and, after the event, to provide a path, plan and resources to help them reach their goal. Zaynab's nomination was signed by Dr. Mario Capecchi, winner of the Nobel Prize in Medicine and the Science Director of the National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists to represent North Carolina based on her academic achievement, leadership potential and determination to serve humanity in the field of medicine.
