Spring into Action: Family Resource and Career Fair - Spring is in the air, and Guilford Parent Academy (GPA) is celebrating by joining community partners to help families get a fresh start. The Spring into Action Family Resource and Career Fair is approaching. At the event, families can learn more about FREE resources available in the community for career guidance, continuing education, childcare options, health and wellness and much more. Recruiters from Guilford County Schools and the City of Greensboro will be on-site with information about rewarding careers available for individuals of all backgrounds. Chick-Fil-A lunch boxes will be provided for the first 300 guests on a first-come, first-served basis. There will also be vegetarian options available. The event is from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Peeler Recreation Center on Sykes Avenue.

FAFSA Helpline – Families and students needing assistance filling out the all-important FAFSA form can get help. Guilford Parent Academy and GCS Counseling Services will have a hotline for Title I families to assist them with filling out the application. Staff will be on hand Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m. to walk families through the process. The number is 336-370-3270.

Introduction to Special Education – Children with known or suspected disabilities have unique educational needs requiring extra support and services through Individualized Education Program (IEP) plans. Guilford Parent Academy is hosting the first of two virtual information sessions for families to learn about the IEP and how to advocate for their child at school. The first is from noon to 1 p.m. Families can register by emailing [email protected] or calling 336-279-4924

Dance Masterclass – Artists with the North Carolina Dance Festival are taking up Residency at Peck Elementary. Every Tuesday and Friday, students learn the basics of unique styles of dance. Dance Project was founded by Jan Van Dyke; an American dancer, choreographer, dance educator and scholar who was considered a pioneer of modern and contemporary dance. Dance Project’s life began in Washington, DC, in 1973 where Jan Van Dyke first founded the organization (later renamed Dance Place). Following a period of international work, Jan restarted Dance Project in Greensboro in 1989.

Student Art Display – Today is the last day for the public to check out student art on display at the Greensboro Cultural Arts Center. Pieces from elementary school students have been on loan to the Cultural Arts Center for Youth Art Month.

Thursday, March 23

Arts Extravaganza- Students at Morehead Elementary will put on their annual Arts Extravaganza event. This year, the theme is “America the Beautiful” The school-wide art show features pieces from every student. Families will be able to walk through the gallery, and watch music, dance and theatrical performances. Doors open at 5 p.m. Performances begin at 6 p.m.

Student Achieves Highest Growth in the State – Southeast Middle student Jack Camacho has done what many students hope for. He is the student with the highest growth in McGraw-Hill’s Achieve 3000 in the state! Achieve 3000 is a digital learning tool designed to engage students and accelerate and deepen learning. His teacher has had three students win this award.

Two GCS students named finalists for the Cheerwine competition – Out of more than 100 submissions, TWO GCS high school students are among 10 finalists for the annual Cheerwine Festival T-shirt design competition. The Grimsley and Northern High School students are now asking for votes so their design can make it on the official Cheerwine Festival T-shirt. In addition to having their design on the shirt, they will also receive a $1,000 gift card, and a plaque from the Mayor of Salisbury. The winning student’s art teacher will also receive $500 for new art supplies. Voting ends on March 27.

GCS Students competing in the State Science Fair – Four middle grades students from the Academy at Lincoln have qualified to compete in the State Science Fair. They will head to Raleigh on March 25 to compete in the Engineering, Technology Earth & Environmental Sciences and Biological Science categories.
