Learn to Play Mah Jongg!

Would you like to learn to play American Mah Jongg?

If you like the card game Rummy or the tile game Rummikub, you might really like Mah Jongg! New players are always welcome to join the weekly drop-in group on Tuesdays from 1-4 in the Activity Room, but on April 25th, May 2nd, and May 9th, some of our players will be offering lessons for new players or players who would like a refresher! If you have been curious about the game or looking for something to do on Tuesday afternoons, this is a great opportunity to learn something new!

Hope to see you there!

This Week in History: The Sinking of the Titanic

On April 10th, 1912, the RMS Titanic set off on its maiden voyage only to sink during the overnight hours between April 14th and 15th. Read more about this tragic and historic event by checking out some of the books below:

Titanic, first accounts

By Tim Maltin (Editor, Introduction)

Historic firsthand accounts and testimonies by survivors and eye- witnesses including Lawrence Beesley, Margaret Brown, Archibald Gracie, Carlos F. Hurd and many more.

Titanic : the tragedy that shook the world : one century later
By LIFE

This oversized, deluxe book is visually splendid and exciting on every page. It includes archival photography, past reporting in LIFE, and the modern-day explorations of Robert Ballard and others that inspired the James Cameron film. We return to first-person accounts, and the words of the survivors are brought to life-with many small stories from steerage told as well as the large, well-known drama from above decks. The book will also include interstitial chapters to lend context, such as a history of famous shipwrecks, and where the Titanic fits in the grand picture.

Sinkable : obsession, the deep sea, and the shipwreck of the Titanic

By Daniel Stone

In Sinkable, Daniel Stone spins a fascinating tale of history, science, and obsession, uncovering the untold story of the Titanic not as a ship but as a shipwreck. He explores generations of eccentrics, who have tried varying methods over the years to raise the Titanic wreckage. Brimming with humor, curiosity and wit, Sinkable follows in the tradition of Susan Orlean and Bill Bryson, offering up a page-turning work of personal journalism and an immensely entertaining romp through the deep sea and the nature of obsession.
