Vermonters Already Feeling the Pain of Trump's Economy, With More Chaos to Come

Government and Politics

Under Donald Trump, America has seen the weakest three-month period of job growth since the pandemic

MONTPELIER, VT - The July jobs report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics confirms what working Vermonters have felt for weeks: under the leadership of Donald Trump and the Republican party, the economy is already backsliding. Donald Trump’s economic policies have led to the weakest three-month period of job growth since the COVID pandemic. Inflation is rising, the economy is tanking, and core sectors like manufacturing and health care are facing mounting threats.

“Families across the country, including here in Vermont, are reeling from inflation and job losses thanks to Trump and the GOP. We are seeing rising costs and economic instability,” said Vermont Democratic Party Executive Director May Hanlon. “Donald Trump and the Republican party promised a so-called ‘Golden Age,’ but the numbers speak for themselves: sluggish job growth, rising inflation, and thousands of manufacturing jobs already lost. In 2026, Republicans everywhere will have to answer to their constituents for enabling this chaos. Voters will remember who stood with working families and who sold them out.”

The July jobs report, released August 01, 2025, demonstrates the consequences of Trump’s reckless agenda:

  • Only 73,000 jobs were added in July, falling far short of the 110,000 projected — marking the weakest three-month period of growth since the pandemic.
  • Over 28,000 manufacturing jobs have been lost since Trump returned to office.
  • Trump’s latest budget cuts threaten to shutter rural hospitals and nursing homes, jeopardizing health care access and jobs in communities like those across Vermont.
  • Meanwhile, inflation for durable necessities hit a 38-year high.
  • Instead of changing course, Trump is plowing ahead with his chaotic trade war by imposing the highest tariffs since World War II and risking even higher inflation.

While Trump and Republicans continue to double down on a billionaire-first agenda, the Vermont Democratic Party (VDP) is fighting to lower costs, protect essential programs, and build an economy that works for everyone, not just the ultra-wealthy and massive corporations. The VDP is committed to building a Vermont where every family has a fair shot - with a government that shows up, delivers results, and puts people first.
