Government and Politics

In a major win for Alaska’s students, families, and educators, the state legislature successfully overrode Governor Mike Dunleavy’s veto of House Bill 57 - a crucial education bill that includes a permanent increase in per-student funding for Alaska’s public schools.
This moment is a turning point.
For years, Governor Dunleavy has blocked efforts to strengthen our public education system. Time and time again, he’s vetoed bills that would have helped schools meet rising costs, retain teachers, and provide students with the resources they deserve. But this time was different — and it’s thanks to the power of grassroots organizing and voter turnout.
Alaska lawmakers were able to do what hadn’t been done in years: override a governor who consistently puts politics ahead of students.
What HB 57 Means for Alaska:
This victory underscores something we’ve said all along: elections matter. When voters show up, when communities get involved, and when we elect leaders who listen, real progress becomes possible.
We’re proud of this step forward - but we’re not stopping here. There’s more to be done to make sure every child in Alaska has access to a quality education, no matter where they live.
Together, we’re building a stronger, more equitable future for all Alaskans.
Let’s keep the momentum going.
