West Virginia Democratic Party Statement on the Anniversary of Roe v. Wade

Government and Politics

January 22, 2025

Charleston, WV — On the anniversary of the Supreme Court’s landmark decision in Roe v. Wade, the West Virginia Democratic Party reflects on the critical rights and freedoms it once guaranteed—now stripped away by Donald Trump’s radical Supreme Court. West Virginia Democratic Party Vice Chair Teresa Toriseva released the following statement:

“On this 52nd anniversary of Roe v. Wade, West Virginia Democrats renew our unwavering commitment to protecting the fundamental right of all women to make their own health care decisions. Because of Donald Trump, women today have fewer rights than their mothers and grandmothers had. Trump’s extreme agenda and the Supreme Court he reshaped have unleashed suffering across the nation, including right here in West Virginia, where extreme abortion bans threaten women’s health and lives.

“Now, as Trump reenters office, he and his Project 2025 allies are doubling down on their dangerous assault on reproductive health care. Their agenda threatens to enact a nationwide abortion ban, restrict access to contraception and IVF, and even surveil and report on women’s pregnancies. West Virginia women deserve better than this dangerous anti-freedom agenda. West Virginia Democrats will fight tooth and nail for their rights and their freedom.”

Trump’s Dangerous Anti-Freedom Agenda

• Trump and his Project 2025 allies are pursuing a national abortion ban and attacking IVF and contraception access.

• Trump’s plan includes using the Comstock Act to ban medication abortion by mail, cutting off critical health care access.

• Trump’s agenda would force states to surveil and report on women’s miscarriages and abortions.

• Despite opening the door to attacks on IVF by overturning Roe, Trump has failed to rule out signing legislation threatening the procedure, as his allies strategize to “re-run the Roe playbook” on IVF.

• On Trump’s first day in office during his previous term, the government’s website offering reproductive health information was taken offline.

The Crisis Trump Created

• Women in 19 states, including West Virginia, live under extreme abortion bans that harm health and safety.

• Maternal health care deserts are expanding, leaving women with fewer options and increasing risks.

• Restrictive abortion bans have led to higher rates of maternal and infant mortality nationwide, disproportionately impacting women of color.

The West Virginia Democratic Party remains committed to fighting for the rights and freedoms of women across our state. We will not rest until every woman has the autonomy to make personal health care decisions without interference from politicians.
