Winsome, Lose Some: Another Week, Another ‘Morally Opposed’ Note

Government and Politics

May 16, 2025

VIRGINIA - It’s been another trying week for Winsome Earle-Sears as her handwritten notes that she’s “morally opposed” to marriage equality and protecting reproductive freedom, her comments downplaying and dismissing the attacks on Virginia jobs, and watermarked stock photos plague her campaign.

SETTLING THIS WEEK’S SCORE

Winsome’s Wins:

  • MAGA Rising Star: New reporting from the Daily Beast names Sears as a MAGA rising star and exposed Sears’ extreme position on LGBTQ rights. Sears has sidestepped questions about her stance on marriage equality and recently gave the commencement address at Regent University in Virginia Beach, a Christian college that describes “homosexual conduct” as “indecent” and “obscene.”
  • Her Comments Are Still a Huge, Huge Thing: After months of Sears defending Donald Trump’s attacks on Virginia jobs, new reporting from Axios Richmond highlights that Virginia will likely lose about 32,000 jobs this year – but Sears has been clear this isn’t a “huge, huge thing.”

Winsome’s Losses:

  • “Morally Opposed,” More Like Extremism Exposed: Following new reporting from the Virginia Mercury detailing Sears’ handwritten note that she’s “morally opposed” to protecting reproductive freedom, elected and reproductive rights leaders called out Sears for her extreme position.
  • Sears Stays Silent:  As threats to Medicaid funding put Virginians’ access to affordable healthcare at risk, Winsome Earle-Sears has stayed silent. This comes as 1.9 million Virginians are enrolled in Medicaid.
  • Failure to Launch: Sears launched a new issues page on her campaign website, and the biggest issue on the page are the stock photos she used and the watermarks she forgot to remove. Chris LaCivita, former Trump Campaign Senior Advisor, even commented “amateurs.”

And with Winsome, it’s Virginians who stand to lose the most:

  • With Winsome Earle-Sears focused on an extreme agenda backing ongoing attacks on Virginia jobs and workers, defunding public schools, and ripping away reproductive rights, Virginians stand to lose the most.
