Wintergreen Music partners with The Nature Foundation at Wintergreen in this first of two special event collaborations. Your group hike begins as Nature Foundation guides take you on a journey through the gorgeous natural setting at Wintergreen on a hike leading you to a place of contemplation and exploration. Honoring the origins of the land, you’ll hear Jim Akins perform a musical tribute on Native American style flute, telling the story of the land from the beginning. Lance Suzuki, classical flute, completes your musical journey by connecting the story to the sounds of the Wintergreen Music Festival today. This event is sure to be one-of-a-kind and space is limited.

Artistic Director Erin Freeman takes the podium leading the Wintergreen Festival Orchestra in the first weekend of MountainTop Masterworks performances with “music to match the view”. From composer Emilie Mayer (known for lush, romantic, Beethoven-style compositions) to Wintergreen’s own concertmaster Elisabeth Adkins, we honor the rich contributions that women have made to the music world. With a special performance of the beautiful Chorale for Strings by the late Ukrainian composer Hanna Havrylets and the sweepingly stunning Barber Violin Concerto, this concert is as rich in historical interest as it is in artistic inspiration.
The Sunday performance of this concert includes a pre-concert talk (beginning at 2:00 pm) with guest conductors to add color and perspective to your concert experience.

Trumpeters can be lyrical, joyful painters and poets – especially under the skillful mastery of Mary Elizabeth Bowden. Clarice Assad’s Bohemian Queen (Co-Commissioned by Wintergreen Music) paints a musical picture of Chicago artist Gertrude Abercrombie, while Reena Esmail’s Rosa de Sal takes you on a dream-like journey of beauty and love. Top it all off with a buoyant symphony by Beethoven and you have the epitome of the “typical yet unique” Wintergreen Music experience.

We finish the 2023 season with Dvo?ák’s stirring ninth symphony, subtitled “From the New World” led by guest conductor Andrew Litton of the New York City Ballet. Perfectly paired with the world premiere of Daron Hagen’s Electric Guitar Concerto, which, in the words of the composer, celebrates “the guitar’s central role in American popular history by roaming freely through folk songs, protest songs, classic rock and roll, and contemporary thrash.” With a vibrant, strong, and colorful opening piece by Lili Boulanger, this concert brings the season to a celebratory and triumphant conclusion!
