The Alachua County school system is governed by a five-member board with members serving staggered, four-year terms.  Board members are elected at large from five geographic districts in bipartisan elections, and all represent the entire county.  The Board members select a chair and a vice chair, both of whom serve one-year terms.

The School Board of Alachua  County has legal authority over the operation of all public schools in the district within the framework established by the state legislature and the Florida Department of Education.  The Board is also responsible for the hiring of a superintendent to oversee the day-to-day operations of the district.
