Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society's signature event, taking place in communities across the nation. It brings people together to Celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer. Remember loved ones lost to the disease. Fight Back against a disease that takes too much. Friends, family, co-workers and neighbors come together to form a Relay team, which collects donations leading up to the event. On April 30th/ May 1st, team members take turns walking around the track at Chula Vista High School, making sure that someone is on the track at all times for 24 hours. Each Relay For Life begins with a Survivors' Lap, during which cancer survivors from the communtity walk the first lap to celebrate their victories while family and friends cheer them on. At 9pm, luminaria bags are lit and remain lit throughout the night to create a path of hope. The Luminaria Ceremony is a time for reflection, grieving, and hope.
