Arundel History
The Arundel PTA was established on May 3, 1948, one year before the opening of Arundel School. The first classes were held on April 18, 1949. The 50th anniversary year celebration was held April 18, 1999. In May of 1998, Arundel was recognized as a California Distinguished School by the California Department of Education. In December, 2000, Arundel became a charter school.
As originally built, Arundel School was the two upper-level buildings (Rooms 1-15). The multi-use room was added in 1956. The lower level (Rooms A-E) was added in 1961; originally this area was the Orchard Play Park. Room 1A was added in 1989, and the new After School site (9A) in 1991. Durig the 1999-2000 school year new construction provided the Administration/Staff Room buildiing and the Library Media Center. Space formerly used for those functions will be renovated into regular classrooms.
Arundel Road, which ran through the school site, was regraded and the two cul-de-sacs created during the 1994-95 school year. Parking off of Phelps Road by the upper playground was also added. In 1996-97, portable classrooms (Rooms F and G) were added to the primary wing.
Now in its 54th year, Arundel School has had six principals: Miss Wilma Rockman, 1949-77; Mr. Richard Smith, 1977-82; Mr. William Hartley, 1982-90; Dr. Robert Winslow, 1990-97; Mrs. Jean Dehner, 1997-2002; and our current principal, Mrs. Allison Liñer.
