Bensalem Township has six volunteer fire companies. This vital system of volunteers is sustained through real estate taxes, state aid and private fund raising. Companies receive some assistance from the Township; however, all depend upon their annual fund drive to maintain their high level of services. Not only to the fire company personnel risk their lives fighting fires, they have a mission to serve and protect the public by fostering a climate of prevention. This is accomplished by teaching and distributing fire prevention information and important life saving techniques. Each company also provides additional services including fire prevention services and tours.
In the Fall of 2005, Bensalem Township unveiled plans for a training center to be built behind the location of the former site of the George Washington Motor Lodge (Route I and Street Road) where all police, firefighters and ambulance workers can sharpen their skills. Mayor DiGirolamo noted that “Bensalem is the largest community in Bucks County and the ninth largest in the state of Pennslyvania. We need a local place where our local police, fire and EMS can train together”.
