About Us:
The Berwick Lions Club was Chartered April 16th, 1947. We were chartered by the Wilkes-Barre Lions Club and since that time, we sponsored the Nescopeck Lions Club, Mifflinville Lions Club, Bloomsburg Lions Club, Benton Lions Club, Berwick Lioness Club, and the Berwick Middle School LEO Club.
In our early years of existence, we made contributions totaling $2,500 to the Football Bleacher Fund at the Berwick High School, purchased a sight machine for the school district, along with donations to the athletic and music programs for the district as well.
Our most outstanding contribution to the Berwick area in both time and money was sponsoring and building the present Berwick Public Library in 1968. Another project for the town of Berwick was the purchase of street signs, which to date cost $10,000.
Fund raising has always been an important part of the club. Many members will recall the many hours spent in door-to-door sales of light bulbs and brooms. Right now our fundraisers are operating the food stand at the Bloomsburg Fair and the 200 Club.
The Bloomsburg Fair has provided our major fund raiser for many, many years. The Fair requires considerable time and effort on the part of our club members, families and friends of the Lions Club. Our first venture at the fair was selling stuffed animals from a tent and later from a small trailer. We now operate a food stand selling the best gyros at the Bloomsburg Fair, from our third larger and more deluxe trailer. For our Lions Club to be successful at the Bloomsburg Fair, we must content with all forms of weather. We thought the 1975 Eloise flood was bad, but since that time, we have gone through three more times when the fair grounds were completely flooded. When we had to move our trailer or loose it to the floodwaters.
No Lions Club history would be complete without the mention of our sight conservation work. Over the years we have provided thousands of pairs of eye glasses for deserving local citizens. We have contributed cash and dogs to the "Leader Dogs for the Blind". Our Club spearheaded a drive known as the "Guy Wright Fund", to aid a young boy whose sight had left him and he had additional medical problems as well. Over many years we raised $40,000 that was given to Guy and his Mother, to purchase a home and have it fixed up to cover all of Guy's needs.
Now to provide you with something strange, when our Lions Club was formed in 1947, there were 40 Charter members. When the Lioness Club was formed, they had 40 members. In 2003, a LEO Club was formed, and they started with 40 members. Strange but true! Other items worth mentioning are - our LEO Club was the first of its kind in District 14G to be formed in a middle school. Due to the Lioness Club, our club never had a female member in its history. However, that changed in 2005 when LeeAnn Fowler became our first female club member, and President for the 2007 - 2008 term. Since that time other females have followed with Angela, Janice, Patricia, Sue and Meredith joining our team.
While our club may not be the largest service club in Berwick, we are very proud of our small but mighty membership. But most of all we are proud to be members of the largest service club in the world.
