The mission of Best Buddies is to enrich the lives of individuals with intellectual disabilities by providing opportunities for one-to-one friendships and integrated employment. Best Buddies is an international non-profit that was founded in 1989 by Anthony Kennedy Shriver. In the past, individuals with intellectual disabilities have not had the opportunity to have friends outside of their environment. Best Buddies matches those with intellectual disabilities, or Buddies, with Citizen Buddies in the corporate and civic communities. The Program Manager works directly with the Sponsor, Buddy and Citizen Buddy to create a long-lasting and meaningful friendship. The opportunities that are available to those with intellectual disabilities through Best Buddies are endless and there is no cost for participating in the program. Each Buddy and Citizen Buddy are matched up based on geographical, gender and activity interests to ensure a successful one-to-one friendship.
