The Boys & Girls Clubs of York County, are devoted to helping young people in our area, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds, develop the skills and attributes to become productive citizens and leaders.

About Us:
In every community, boys and girls are left to find their own recreation and companionship in the streets. An increasing number of children are at home with no adult care or supervision. Young people need to know that someone cares about them.

Boys & Girls Clubs offer that and more. Club programs and services promote and enhance the development of boys and girls by instilling a sense of competence, usefulness, belonging and influence.

Boys & Girls Clubs are a safe place to learn and grow -- all while having fun. It is truly The Positive Place For Kids.

History:

The Boys & Girls Clubs of York County began in January of 1992, when the first two Units received an operation charter from Boys & Girls Clubs of America. Two Clubs opened in space provided by the Housing Authority of Fort Mill and of York.

In January 1994 a third Club opened on Hagins Street in Rock Hill in space provided by the Sword of the Spirit Church. This space included a gymnasium and classroom space.

A fourth Club opened in November 1996 as the Boyd Hill Learning Center in the Housing Authority Community of Boyd Hill on Fargo Street, and in November 1997 the Workman Street Learning Center in the Housing Authority development on Workman Street in Rock Hill began operation .

In 1998, the York Club relocated for the third time into two mobile classrooms behind the former Jefferson Elementary School in York. This location included an outdoor playground area and access to basketball courts. Due to a drastic decrease in funding the York Unit was closed..

In 2000, the Boyd Hill Learning Center relocated to the City of Rock Hill Boyd Hill Recreation Center on Constitution Blvd. This location includes a high school size gym, computer lab, outside playing area, outside basketball, and tennis courts. It also has a high school size baseball field with outside eating areas. This move also gave the Boyd Hill Learning Center assess to the pool located beside the recreation center.

In 2001, the Hagins St. Boys & Girls Club relocated to the City of Rock Hill Emmett Scott Recreation Center on Crawford Rd. The name of the Hagins St. Unit changed to the Emmett Scott Boys & Girls Club. With this move, the new Emmett Scott Unit was the largest Boys & Girls Club in York County. With a high school size gym, outside fields, playground, picnic areas, outside basketball courts, weight room, game room, extra large classrooms, arts & crafts room, auditorium, tennis courts, outside pool, and baseball field.

Last year Boys & Girls Clubs of York County served over 1200 young people between the ages of 6 to 18 years old. The growth and success of Boys & Girls Clubs of York County presents interesting challenges to staff and volunteers as we meet the needs of our growing communities while continuing to offer quality youth development programs.

The uniqueness of Boys & Girls Club programs makes it essential to the well being of our young people, especially those from disadvantaged circumstances, that we continue to grow and expand to all corners of York County and beyond.
