The 100-acre Brown's Lake Bog feels primordial, with its fern-carpeted lowland forest and surrounding oak-studded glacial hills. Designated a National Natural Landmark, the focal point of the preserve is its floating bog home to the rare and whimsical buckbean, pitcher plant, cottongrass and many more. All told, the preserve is home to more than 20 rare plants. Activities include hiking, wildlife watching, volunteer opportunities (contact [email protected]). Open year-round, dawn to dusk.
