Canton Lutheran's first worship services were held in 1868 in sod or log homes of Norwegian immigrant homesteaders. It was the first Christian congregation established in Lincoln County. Later, a second Norwegian Lutheran congregation was established in Canton. In 1902 the two congregations merged and actually joined their two wooden churches together to form one large auditorium. The present church was erected In 1908-09, and at the time was said to be the largest Lutheran Church building west of Minneapolis. Some unique features of Canton Lutheran Church are it's beautiful woodwork, a balcony that circles the entire top level and murals on the ceiling and altar. The office-library-chapel-Sunday school addition was built in 1962. Twenty-six sons and daughters of Canton Lutheran Church have been ordained as Lutheran pastors.
