Carson Valley Sertoma Club

About Sertoma

How many times have you seen newspaper photos of our members donating to various charities like the Young at Heart Soup Lunches, Carson Valley Food Closet, been the recipient of a Scholarship or hearing aids, or danced the Chicken Dance at our Oktoberfest? All of these activities demonstrate what our Sertoma name means Service to Man Kind.

Our International organization celebrated our 100th anniversary April 11, 2012. Our local club is working on its 35th year of providing service to Carson Valley and Douglas County. In those 35 years we've given thousands of hours and hundreds of thousands of dollars to the Food Closet, Young at Heart at the Senior Center, China Spring and Aurora Pines Youth Facilities, Family Support Council, City of Refuge, Boys and Girls Club, the Fishing Derby and many youth organizations.

Our members, past and present, have been instrumental in making the Carson Valley Swim Center a reality, getting the land donated to start China Spring, installing Hearing Loop equipment at the Senior Center, and even lending hands to build the first Ranchos VFD building. We put on the one and only Chicken Stampede back in 1982 that became the precursor to some years of actually having a Douglas County Fair. We started the annual Truck Pull and hosted many Barn Dances at the Fairgrounds.

All of these activities are part of our heritage and are a history of a lot of hard work and fun. We do them to be a part of our community, and to raise funds to provide our type of Service to Mankind like hearings aids, hearing loops, book scholarships, soup lunches, and support for our active troops and veterans around the globe. And when we get a Thank You note from a hearing aid recipient that says "Thank you, there's a whole new world out there for me to listen to and enjoy", that makes it all worthwhile.

Internationally we are looking forward to our second 100 years. Locally we're at 35 and counting, judging our scholarship applications, and making plans for even bigger and better activities in the future. If you would like to find out more about what we do, and why, please visit us on Friday mornings, 7 AM, at C.O.D. Casino. We will even buy you a cup of coffee.
