Rural Castlewood--where Daniel Boone and his preacher brother lived for several months--is the home of Castlewood High School. The school is situated in the western part of Russell County on a hill overlooking U.S. Alternate 58. It is located 3 miles from the town of St. Paul, 17 miles from Lebanon, the county seat, and 25 miles northwest of Abingdon. A surveyor's book of 1780 shows that the present school plant is located on the original 620-acre holdings of General William Russell, for whom Russell County was named.
