History: 

Beautiful rolling hills lead the way to Flushing, a modern community with a rural atmosphere. Located 3 miles west of Interstate-75 and approximately 10 miles northwest of downtown Flint. Flushing exhibits a subtle charm that explains the area's initial settlement in 1835 and continues to attract new residents today. The Township of Flushing was established in 1838.

The community consists of Flushing Township and the City of Flushing. The Township surrounds the City on three sides. For nearly a century, the City was only a village which, by 1960, had grown to about 3,000 residents. The population of the surrounding township at that time was 8,535. The village of Flushing wanted to become a city, and they needed 5,000 residents to make that happen. It was decided to try and annex part of Flushing Township so they would qualify for city status.

In 1963 an election was held that incorporated over 4,000 Township residents into the Village of Flushing, leaving Flushing Township with a population of 4,440.

The City's population was calculated by the 1990 Census to be 8,542, and the Township's population had grown to 9,223. The combined population is 17,765 according to the 1990 Census. In 1990 Flushing Township Board of Trustees voted to become a Charter Township. The request was sent to the state, and the Township met all the qualification and was approved to become Flushing Charter Township.

The progressive attitude of the area's residents, and the pride they take in their community is in evidence everywhere.

Housing for instance: Housing throughout Flushing takes advantage of the area's natural beauty and is functional and versatile, suitable to anyone's needs. Many attractive single-family residential developments are in progress throughout the community, as well as several modern multiple-dwelling units of equal appeal. Many beautiful subdivision have been built in both the Township and the City. Up-dated zoning ordinances and master plans permit the City and the Township to keep their long-range housing and business development goals firmly intact.

Local realtors, builders and the Flushing Chamber of Commerce will assist interested parties in matters of commercial development. Both the City and Township invite inquiries regarding new commercial growth.

The natural beauty of the Flushing community is an enviable asset, and one that is being enhanced rather than endangered. In the City, for instance, a recent major beautification program included extensive landscaping work and paving of more than 30 miles of streets. curbs, gutters and storm sewers were installed at the same time. The next major project is re-structuring of the bridge across the Flint River in downtown Flushing.

The City is a 4-square-mile area featuring flourishing downtown district that includes a full range of shops and stores.

The Township, measuring 6 miles on each side, and on the verge of significant residential and commercial growth. This is credited in part to the completion of a county interceptor sewer system. Flushing Township is one of the areas it will serve.

In addition to its own retail district, Flushing also is close to Genesee Valley Mall, a regional shopping center located a few minutes to the east, and various other shopping areas.

Nearby I-75 provides speedy highway transportation. Bishop Airport is only a few miles away from Flushing.

Cooperation between City and Township has facilitated growth in Flushing. A jointly operated volunteer fire department features the latest in fire-fighting equipment and a new station was recently built. Flushing City has 12 full-time police officers and 7 part time officers that provide law enforcement in the city. Flushing Township has 5 full-time officers and 5 part-time officers. There is a Mutual Assist Program in effect with the two departments and Genesee County.

Extensive recreational facilities, including an active summer soccer ball program, jointly sponsored by the Flushing City, Flushing Township and The Flushing Community School District. Five city parks provide 35 acres of recreational area. Flushing Valley Golf and Country Club is an 18-hole layout. Immediately south of the business district is Riverview Park, which has a recreation area, a band shell for musical concerts, and a public swimming pool. There is a very active outdoor program for Concerts in the Park during the summer months.

Flushing Township has acquired 108 acres on the Flint River being developed into a nature park. This park is located on the West Side of McKinley Road and about one north of Mt. Morris Road. This is an area where the whole family can go and enjoy the beautiful woods, walkways, bicycle paths, horseback riding, cross country skiing and picnic area. There is also a 125-acre Genesee County Park located in Flushing Township. This park in located on the West Side of McKinley Road just north of the City limits.

The Flushing Chamber of Commerce is an active organization of 148 members, and undertakes a variety of projects each year including support of the annual Flushing Festival. The fair is a major attraction to residents and visitors alike. The Candle Walk is also another community-supported project that is held the first week of December.

The Flushing Community Schools are among the best in the state. With a present enrollment in 1998 of 4,205 students. The school district consists of four elementary schools, a junior and senior high school. There is also a Catholic Elementary school located in the community. Higher education opportunities are available in nearby Flint. Fourteen churches offer a wide variety of Christian activities. A very active Senior Citizens Center offers additional needs of the community. The recent completion of the Museum by the Flushing Historical Society is a wonderful area to visit, and see the many artifacts collected for display. This was a cooperative effort by the many members of the Historical Society, Flushing Township, Flushing City and private individuals.
