Citizen Schools is a non-profit organization that partners with public middle schools in low-income areas to expand the school day. Our mission is to connect everyday student learning to college and career through community engagement. Volunteers called, "Citizen Teachers," lead 11-week hands-on learning projects called apprenticeships.
Apprenticeships introduce students to new
careers that are in demand in today's economy. The apprenticeship
options are endless: creating web pages, performing a theatre
production, engineering their own cars, proposing an entrepreneurial
business plan, or painting a mural. These programs inspire and expose
underprivileged students in low-income schools to new and exciting
careers while equipping them with the skills that need to be developed
to pursue these careers, and break free from the cycle of poverty.
