City of Decatur

225 West Monroe Street
260-724-7171

History

A man (Samuel Rugg) with a vision founded the city of Decatur in 1836. The vision was that this town would be the county seat and would grow to be a city of importance. That is exactly what has transpired in the intervening years!

Decatur is not only the county seat but also the home to many thousands of people that daily set about the task of providing a living for themselves and families.

A focal point of the downtown is the magnificent Victorian courthouse that was built in 1873 and remains the home of the County government. The county historical society is also located near downtown in a beautiful home once occupied by a prominent family of Decatur. The location of North Adams Community School District and Bellmont Junior/Senior High School at the east edge of Decatur on the grounds of the former Steele's Park and Fairgrounds is a beautiful place indeed and a source of local pride. The only hospital in Adams County is also located in Decatur and has provided the best of care for more than eighty years through a network of local and visiting physicians and specialists from nearby Fort Wayne.
