City Of Franklin

70 East Monroe Street
317-736-3602

Twenty miles south of Indianapolis and 90 miles north of Louisville, Kentucky, on I-65 and U.S. 31, is Franklin (population 20,000). Franklin is named after one of our nation's founding fathers, Benjamin Franklin.

Franklin, located in the heart of Johnson county, serves as the county seat. Its location has allowed it to maintain its small town identity and integrity while benefiting from the growth and economy of the Indianapolis MSA.

Several names for this new town were suggested and that of Franklin by Samuel Herriott, a great admirer of Benjamin Franklin, was accepted, and thus another bit of history connected with the founding of Franklin cluster around the dream of George King. If this dream city, existing on paper "without form or void," existed in the brain of any man in that little group of Pioneer fathers, it must have been George King, who had envisioned this day's accomplishment from the beginning, when he led the way to the organization of Johnson County in 1822.
