Fredericktown, Missouri, is a town of a few thousand people in the northeastern foothills of the Ozark Mountains, in the United States. Located in sparsely populated Madison County, it is ninety miles (145 km) south of St. Louis and fifty miles (80 km) northwest of Cape Girardeau, at the intersection of U.S. Route 67 and Route 72. The town is surrounded on three sides (east, west, and south) by the easternmost parcel of the Mark Twain National Forest, and it is close to a number of hard-to-reach but strikingly beautiful wilderness areas and rivers. The combination of a low cost of living, easy access to parks and scenic rivers, and proximity via a major highway to St. Louis have made the town a popular site for both tourists and retirees. As of the 2000 census, the city population was 3,928. Fredericktown is the county seat of Madison County
