Girard, Ohio is nestled in the center of Mahoning Valley. Conveniently located between the area's two largest cities (Youngstown and Warren), and less than two hours from Cleveland, Ohio, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Girard residents enjoy the best of small community living and big city excitement.
With a population of approximately 10,902, the city may be small in size, but it is big on community services. The local police department, with a staff of ??, boasts a police officer-to-resident ratio of 1 to 404. Our full-service fire department has 17 full-time employees. They answer approximately 1350 assistance calls per year with an average response time of 3.5 minutes.
Girard climate is typical of the heartland states. The splendor of our four seasons keeps the street department busy year-round. With a staff of nine, the department provides snow removal, street sweeping and street repair services for the City's approximately 50 miles of road. It also provides an excellent fall leaf collection program each year.
Residents and visitors alike exclaim over the wealth of natural beauty contained in our modest boundaries (4.5 square miles of corporation limits and 1,000 acres of Girard Lakes property). The city owns two lakes for fishing, and three recreational parks. It also recently acquired Liberty Memorial Park -- 63 acres of beauty -- which already rests inside the city's boundaries.
The parks are maintained by our recreation department. Recreational programs are enjoyed year-round by residents of all ages. Cold-weather recreational programs, including walking, volleyball and basketball, are held in the city gym. Girard is believed to be the only city in Ohio with a municipal-owned gym attached to its City Building.
Another unique asset of Girard is the city health department. Residents receive a wide array of health-related services including child and adult immunizations; Home Health Nursing; vital statistics; agency referral; building, plumbing and housing licensing; and inspection and licensing of food service operations.
