About The City :
In 1906 Henry Miller, known as the "Cattle King" founded Gustine to provide for the needs of his extensive operation, the Miller & Lux Corporation. The town flourished and was incorporated in 1915. Since that time, our city has enjoyed a steady growth and continued prosperity for its citizens. Our population topped 4,000 in 1990, just in time for our Diamond Jubilee.
Gustine is extremely proud of its heritage, and this pride is reflected in its clean, well-kept neighborhoods and attractive business community. Employment is adequate and public services are abundant. Two very active 4-H clubs, together with the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, are among the many activities for our young citizens. Merced College, Los Banos Campus, is located 20 miles from Gustine, and California State University at Stanislaus is just 25 miles away in Turlock. The 10th campus of the University of California is also going to be in Merced County with enrollment beginning in the Fall of 2004.Our recreational facilities are among the finest anywhere. Four parks grace our neighborhoods as well as three playgrounds, a swimming pool, and other sports facilities. There are important community assets that provide for the many community activities and sporting events that Gustine enjoys. More than 30 service organizations and social clubs are active and contribute in many ways to making our community a better place to live and our seven churches provide much for the social life, as well as for the spiritual life, of the community.Although we're a small city, residents of Gustine are well-protected. In 1985 Gustine had the second lowest crime rate of all agencies in California. The City of Gustine maintains a law enforcement department of six full-time personnel and four reservists, our 20 volunteer firefighters help keep our fire insurance rating at 6, and our 22-bed General Hospital, three physicians, two dentists, and other health care professionals look after our health care needs. The business community is aggressive and responsive to the needs of its customers. Stores are well-stocked and merchants are anxious to provide the very best products and services. Gustine has a neighborhood shopping center, many small businesses, and two banks. You can find most of what you need right in town, but if you need to get away for an afternoon of shopping, we're within a 30 minute drive of two regional shopping malls.
