The City of Jackson is governed by a mayor and five (5) elected council members. The mayor and council members serve a four-year term. They are both a legislative and administrative body. Their legislative functions include enacting ordinances and resolutions, establishing programs and setting policy. As an administrative body, they adopt budgets, hire personnel, negotiate contracts, and, in general, direct the activity under their supervision.
