History

James Elliot founded the City of Elliott in 1852, but the City had to be renamed because there was already a town with that name. Prairie City was established in 1856 as a Post Office and the railroad arrived at the same time. The City was incorporated in 1868. Prairie City was settled as a farm community, unlike the surrounding cities where most of the early residents were coal miners.
