our mission is to provide each student with a safe, drug free, disciplined environment with dedicated, well-prepared teachers who empower each student to become a responsible, self-sufficient citizen with knowledge, skills and attitudes essential to thrive in an ever changing global society by providing innovative academic and technical experiences through the cooperative effort of parents, community leaders and educators.
History:
Clara is a small, thriving town located about 8 miles south of Waynesboro on State Highway 63. Though small, Clara had many interesting people, traditions, and locations in its past. At first Clara was named Graham, then Big Rock and finally Clara after one of its first school teachers, Miss Clara Bunch.
Clara was a booming sawmill town when Robinson Land and Lumber Co. had its headquarters in Clara. Clara has been noted as home for many "good things." Politicians were among those things. A few politicians serving Wayne County over the years were: Mr. Sam Cochran - Sheriff, Mr. Carlos Trigg - Chancery Clerk, Mr. Jim Bunch - Supervisor, Mr. Roland Dean - Supervisor, Mr. Shorty Hutto - Supervisor, Mr. Nig Hutto - Supervisor, and Mr. Marvin Farrior - the longest serving Sheriff in Mississippi.
Churches are another good characteristic about Clara. The First United Methodist Church has been a landmark for years in Clara. The church was organized in 1903, and completed in 1905. First Baptist Church of Clara is another example. The church was organized in 1911 as a result of revival held by Rev. Harmon Holdcomb. Clara Church of God is another early church in Clara. In 1930, Evangelist D.A. Waters started a revival. In 1938, a church building was completed. I bet you did not know that a newspaper was published in Clara. It was called the Clara Observer, and it was published every first and third Friday.
On July 7, 1914, a large crowd gathered to welcome the first passenger train to Clara. It took two trains to carry people from M&O across the Chickasway River and through Jackson. As estimated 3,000 people passed through Clara during this time. Another interesting fact about Clara is it had two drug stores: The Carlos Trigg Drug Store and the Clara Drug Store operated by Dr. G.W. Mason. The movie theater, yes I said movie theater, called the Elite, was a modern movie theater equipped with electric fans. The theater was also used by people to listen to music played by a piano. The post office was established on July 25, 1896. It's current postmistress is Austlinne Trigg. On May 6, 1969 the second branch of the First State Bank in Waynesboro was opened in Clara.
In addition to the bank, passenger train station, school, churches, drug stores, post office and theater, Clara also had a hotel, cotton gin turpentine still, two general mercantile stores, dummy line, two doctors (Mason and McCune) a calabash and a CC Camp (Civilian Conservation Camp) which was set up in 1933.
After Robinson Land and Lumber left Clara, the community began to decline. Presently, Clara has a K-8 school, a post office, two restaurants, numerous churches, several stores, a bank and a video rental store. Clara has a population of about 1,250 people.
