Club 3000 was formed in response to the announced intention, in 1987, to locate a solid waste landfill in Southern Stark County, Ohio. The landfill was to be built north of the Tuscarawas County line and astride the Big Indian water aquifer, the primary source of drinking water for hundreds of thousands of people in Tuscarawas and Stark County. Club 3000 opposed the construction of such a facility at this location.
Starting in 1990 and continuing to present, Club 3000 has monitored the CountyWide Landfill in keeping with signed agreements with the Landfill authorities and the EPA to ensure compliance with standing regulations and guard against land and water pollution.
Other activities undertaken include educating and informing the general public about the possible effects of landfills on the water, land, air and general health and welfare of the community through meetings and the provision of speakers. Club 3000 also conducts research on water pollution and the long-term effects of landfills.
