The roots of Emanuel United Church of Christ can be traced back to March 24, 1897 when a group of Swiss families, led by the Reverend Jacob Singer, held their first worship service at the home of Peter Marti, 7 Locust Street, attended by seven families who organized first under the name of the “Evangelical Reformed Church of Glade Run.”
The families of the church continued to meet, and grow both in numbers and in their faith. The current lot of EUCC was purchased in 1902, completing the building on June 21, 1903. Changes continued to occur at Emanuel and in the Church as a whole. In the mid 50’s the Congregational Church and the Christian Church merged to become known as the United Church of Christ. Today, EUCC is currently part of the Clarion Association of the Penn West Conference of the United Church of Christ.
Services are held every Sunday. The choir and organist provide music for services. Sunday school, for all age groups, is held each Sunday prior to the services. Each year the members of Sunday School chose a worthwhile organization to learn about and donate money to. In the past year, supported by the general congregation, members of Sunday school supported drilling a water well in Mozambique. Members of Emanuel enjoy a variety of church organizations and services including the Emanuel/Triangle Class; 55+; Women’s Guild; and Evangelism, Stewardship, and Visions. These organizations complete service projects for the church at large, as well as supporting the local community.
While today’s church building is vastly different than it was back in 1897, the spirit remains much the same: people who desire to share fellowship, friendship, and the gospel with each other.
