First Assembly of God in Des Allemands began in a tent on February 21, 1955. The tent was erected on Whitley Drive on property owned by Raymond Dufrene. Services were held in the tent until the congregation was able to move to the present location in July of 1955. Bro. Cecil Janway and his family were the founding pastors. From the beginning the church experienced rapid growth and in 1958 a seven room annex was added to the church facilities. In 1973 the present sanctuary was added. During his twenty-one years as pastor, Bro. Janway baptized more than 250 people in water, prayed with more than 2,000 believers to receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit and dedicated countless babies to the Lord. The church has had other pastors, but no one has ever be able to stand in the door of the church with a smile and an extended hand to say "Comment allez-vous" in quite the same way that Bro. Janway had done.
