First Baptist Church was founded on July 4, 1926. On that day 35 to 40 people came together to organize a Baptist church in New Iberia. On that day 23 people became members. The Rev. M. W. Salassi was called as Pastor. Within a few years the church had purchased a lot on Railroad Avenue and constructed a building. In 1929 the church was constructed. The walls and roof were raised in one day and an evening service was conducted in the unfinished building that night.
Tradgey struck in 1991 as fire destroyed the church. Services were held in the Strother Building the next day. In 1993 the current Sanctuary was constructed at a cost of about $900,000 on the corner of St.Peter Street and Julia Street. By this time the church owned the original site on the corner of St. Peter Street and Weeks Street and almost the entire block on St. Peter Street between Weeks and Julia Street. This is our current location today.
We today still remain the church "small enough to know you, large enough to serve you". Our greatest asset today is the work the Lord is doing among our young married couples and their families. In 2007 the YMCA (Young Married Couples and Adults) was formed with Terry Williams as her teacher. The class began with one couple and today is the largest class in Sunday School and are the movers and shapers of the church. Their fellowships often include as few as 24 to as many as 40 total present.
