On December 20, 1885, eight people met in Pecos, Texas, for the purpose of organizing a Baptist church. Reverend S.B. Calloway, its first pastor, acted as moderator. On January 31, 1886, the church was incorporated under the laws of the State of Texas as "The First Missionary Baptist Church of Pecos City, Texas." The name was later shortened to "The First Baptist Church of Pecos City, Texas." In September 1886, the church decided to begin at once the building of a house of worship. The members agreed on the dimensions of 30 feet by 50 feet, with walls 14 feet high. There was difficulty in collecting enough money to complete the church. In December 1886, the church received a loan of $400.00 to finish the building. There was difficulty in repaying this loan. After the building was completed in 1887, members unanimously agreed to extend the use of the church to all religious denominations. By 1890 the church had grown to 27 members. For the first time, the church was able to contribute beyond its immediate needs. A donation of ten dollars was given to foreign missions. Also at this time, Brother Pio Quinto Yebabrn was ordained a Minister of the Gospel by the church and licensed to exhort and preach. He and four other Mexican members were granted their letters for the purpose of organizing a church. Church construction began on February 2, 1910 when ground was broken by the four oldest members of the church. Less than one year later, on January 29, 1911, Reverend George W. Truett of Dallas preached the dedicatory service of the new $25,000.00 brick church. Beginning on January 8, 1956 a week long meeting took place in order to dedicate the new Sanctuary, which we still use today. It was built to replace the one which would have to be torn down in 1957 and replaced by a paved parking lot due to the artisan springs which continued to weaken the foundation of the church built in 1910. In the last 110 years we have been privileged to have twenty-one men to pastor us.
