Gilford Elementary School
Gilford Elementary School, in Gilford, NH has about 450 students, kindergarten to fourth grade. Our Middle and High School is across the street from us and there is a city named Laconia nearby.
We live in a rural area with many mountains and woods around us. The total area of Gilford is 50.9 square miles, 38.3 square miles of land and 12.6 miles of water. There is about 12 miles of shoreline on Lake Winnipesaukee. The permanent population is around 7,000. The seasonal population is 12,000 /-.
We live in a region that has all four seasons. It's warm in the summer and cold in the winter. The average summer temperatures are in the 80's. The winter temperatures are usually in the 20's with much snow. The wind is strong in the fall. The springs in Gilford are cool and windy with lots of mud. We love the spring because it's Maple Syrup time.
New Hampshire is very unique because our elevation goes from a high of 6,288 to a low at sea level. Our land in Gilford is very hilly, and there are several small mountains around us. The highest mountain in Gilford is Belknap Mountain. It is 2,384 feet high.It is right behind our school. On the other side of the mountain is Gunstock Ski Area. We have mostly forest areas with lakes between. The biggest mountain in New Hampshire is Mount Washington. It is 6,288 feet high. It has snow on its top almost year round. Our two biggest lakes are called Lake Winnipesaukee and Lake Winnisquam. The movie "On Golden Pond" was filmed on Squam Lake right near us. Many of our lakes an d mountains are Indian names. Some common animals that we could see in the forest are raccoons, porcupines, squirrels, moose, deer, skunks, bears, beavers, and garter snakes.
Tourism is our major industry. In the winter people come to ski, ice fish, and snowmobile. In the summer they come to enjoy swimming, water skiing, boating, camping, and hiking. They also come to the motorcycle races and the Winston Cup car races. Motorcycle week is crazy around here with at least a hundred thousand motorcyclists coming from all over the world. They come to see the Loudon Classic- the oldest motorcycle race in the country. In the fall many people visit this area to see the colorful leaves and go to the country fairs. If you were to visit Gilford we would take you for a ride on the boat called the Mount Washington, go to Funspot, or if it's winter go skiing at Gunstock. New Hampshire is a good place for tourists to see other things like Polar Caves, the Flume or The Old Man in the Mountain. Every year we have a Gilford Old Home Day parade and fair. There are many exciting events and happenings in Gilford.
Our main transportation is cars. Most of us come to school on buses. Some kids walk or ride their bikes to school. Boston, Massachusetts is about two hours away and many of us go down to the city to see museums, professional sports, or colonial history. In most areas of Gilford the traffic is slow. We counted only 3 cars in ten minutes passing our school one morning.
