Glen Allen Elementary School

11101 Mill Road
804-756-3040

History

The Old Glen Allen School began in 1886, as a single class room in the home of Miss Lizzie Holladay. The Glen Allen school on Old Washington Highway was completed in October of 1911 as a two story building with four classrooms, grades one through seven. Between 1911 and 1941 the school served, at varying times, both elementary and high school students. In 1926 the tenth and eleventh grades were added, and the school became accredited. Between 1942 and 1951 Glen Allen was strictly a senior high school, but changed in 1951 to serve only the elementary grades until its closing in 1978.

Today we have grown into a modern school building accommodating over 600 students. Once the location of a lodge and resort, the New Glen Allen School, located on Mill Road, is now part of the Henrico County School system of 39 elementary schools, 9 middle schools, and 8 high schools. Henrico County governs us through a Managerial System, consisting of elected supervisors and a county manager. Our county population is over 220,000 people with 38,000 children populating our schools. With easy access to interstate highways, Glen Allen continues to grow as its families commute to many surrounding cities to work.
