Good Shepherd Episcopal Church

1207 Winding Way Drive
281-482-7630

Our mission is provided to us in Matthew 28:19: "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit."

In the beginning, there were fifteen sheep and one shepherd. The first service of Good Shepherd was held on Palm Sunday, 1959, in the auditorium of the old Friendswood High School on Spreading Oaks. Five months later, ground was broken on five acres of Galveston County prarie and soon after, a small church, what is now Shepherds Hall, was built on Winding Way and was dedicated by then-Bishop John E. Hines. With advent of the space program, the quiet little Quaker town of Friendswood grew, and so did Good Shepherd. In 1966 and 1967 a new church school wing and church offices were added. In 1977, Good Shepherd attained Parish status, and a new nave was built in 1980. In the last five years, a new parish hall and classroom building was added, the office building was remodeled, and currently the nave is undergoing a rebirth.

Good Shepherd has been fortunate to have had three rectors. The Rt. Rev. Bill Sterling was rector for 23 years and was then elected Suffragan Bishop of the Diocese of Texas. Sadly for us, but joyfully for Bill, he was called home to be with his Lord in June, 2005. His loving care and vitality was a joy to all who knew him, and he will be sorely missed. Our second rector was The Rev. Robert Wareing, who was rector for 10 years and is currently vicar of All Saints, Stafford. The current rector, The Rev. Jim Nelson, came to us in 2000.
