At Harker-Wylie School, we believe that all children are capable of learning and reaching their full potential. Individual needs are met through exposure to a child-centered curriculum. Starting in the preschool classrooms, we strive to design activities and experiences that encourage our students to become creative and independent thinkers.
Students at all grade levels enjoy many reading/writing activities. Both individual and group stories and books are created. Thematic units are incorporated into the curriculum as a means of integrating various subject areas.
Math skills are practiced in a variety of ways, including manipulatives, computer programs, drills, contests, and making purchases in classroom stores. Students are encouraged to become independent problem-solvers.
All classrooms have computers--either stand alone or networked centers or both. Educational courseware is used by the students at their instructional level to enhance reading, language arts, and math.
Participation in special activities (i.e. grandparents' day, family fun day, spirit week, Family Math, Science, and Family Astro, Literary Club, Battle of the Books, Fitness Club and Dance Club) fosters school spirit and encourages a sense of community. Musical performances, projects, assemblies, and field trips help round out our experiences
