Mission
Our Mission at Hope Mills Middle School is to provide a secure, inviting environment where everyone can grow. Our focus on strong instructional leadership, quality instructional time, and high expectations will ensure success in meeting the challenges of the 21st century.
Originally, the Town of Hope Mills was known as Little Rockfish Village and there is evidence that education was a major concern as early as 1839. The Cumberland County School System was active as early as 1885. According to Journalist Mr. Eddie Dees in his history of Hope Mills, ” Hope Mills Heritage A Pictorial and Sentimental History of a N.C. Mill Town”, there was a school at the library, then a school at the site that is now Hope Mills Middle School. It was in session in 1894.
Early education times brought the then Governor of North Carolina, Charles U. Aycock and a professor to the town to encourage a tax to fund education in the town, Later, a vote was held to fund education and it passed. Thus the school was built and named the graded School and it was located on Main Street. The first brick building was erected on the present site of Hope Mills Middle School in 1904.
In December, 1905, Governor Robert B. Glenn, attended the dedication of the new Hope Mills Graded School. Later in 1909, a high school was established. On Easter Sunday, 1916, a fire destroyed the building. A new school was begun in 1919 and the first class graduated in 1923. The first graduating class to attend school twelve years occurred in 1947. From those early days has come a tradition and heritage that still exists today.
It is with pride that we wear the Purple and Gold colors of our school.
