Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world one child and one community at a time.
History:
Bryan's Kiwanians gathered for the club's charter night program on Wednesday, July 27, 1955, at the Bryan Masonic Temple. Sponsoring Bryan's new club was the Kiwanis Club of Defiance.Herschel Blosser was the Bryan Kiwanis Club's first president. Joining him in leading the fledgling club were vice president Grover Rusk, secretary Wayne McAuley, treasurer Robert Piddock and board members Joe Sito, John Stokes, Jerry Bergsman, Henry Walters, Robert Warner, HC Vannorsdall and Clarence Bischoff. There were 29 charter Kiwanians. That first year, the club met at the former Elder Hotel.Charter members, Henry Walters and Carlton Hardy - and other long-time Bryan Kiwanians - were there when the club first conceived of its now famous Fly-In Breakfast 37 years ago. The Fly-In Breakfast has become a Fourth of July tradition for Williams County, drawing thousands to the Williams County Airport each Independence Day.The Fly-In - and other Kiwanis Club activities - raises the money that allows the club to provide monetary and other support to the community. The club's first fund raising project was a sidewalk sale of Kiwanis peanuts. Later that fundraiser was revived, with Dave Schumm serving as peanut chairman, and it continues today. A coveted Kiwanis award is the Golden Peanut trophy, presented to the Bryan club's top peanut salesman each year.
