La Jolla Womens Club

715 Silverado Street

History :

The Building
Through the financial backing of Ellen Browning Scripps, a clubhouse, designed by Irving John Gill (1870-l936), was built in 1913/14. On October 5, 1914 the clubhouse was dedicated. Miss Scripps spoke at the dedication:
"This house is but a temporal foothold for the building up of a structure not made of hands, where if we will, it shall dwell the true spirit of democracy, human justice and perfect companionship, out of which shall go forth that spirit of love and service which meets no barriers, knows no bounds."

The La Jolla Woman's Clubhouse is an outstanding example of Gill's mature period and shows his particular genius as a designer, using the innovative technique of tilt-slab construction. There are few embellishments to detract from the simple lines. The walls are flush with the casing, there are no moldings, baseboards, wainscoting or any other dust catching features. The doors are single slab, hand polished mahogany on invisible hinges. Lighting is provided both by high stained glass windows and by near floor to ceiling windows opening to the gardens. Gill's traditional arches frame the wrap around porch and a vine covered pergola extends to the street
